Balance & Poise

Balance & Poise: low center of mass kinetic art sculpture featuring a graceful girl in a yoga pose- a perfect physics toy graduation gift for my daughter! This delightful creation by Kyle Auga @kyleskinetics has the curious motion of a 3D physical pendulum- a complex motion which can be broken down into oscillations along two dimensions and rotation about the point of contact. Crafted from stainless steel, the stick figure plus counterweights and bar structure is designed such that its center of mass is few centimeters below the contact point when at rest. When the sculpture is tipped the center of mass swings under the pivot point in this stable equilibrium condition- no magnets needed to create this physics magic. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get kinetic art like this and other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #kineticart #centerofmass #lowcenterofmass #balancetoy #physicstoy #physicsart #physics #stableequilibrium #equilibrium #oscillations #physicalpendulum #pendulum #torque #restoringforce #desktoy #science #scienceisawesome #newtonssecondlaw #centerofgravity

Static Spheres

Static Spheres: triboelectric effect toy. The red polystyrene spheres are given an acquired net negative charge, and their mutual repulsion allows them to jump a centimeter or more as charge is manipulated on the plastic container. The spheres stick to the plastic after it was charged by rubbing with a piece of wool cloth. Bringing an object near the container momentarily moves electrons (charge) around creating repulsive forces (sphere v. sphere) and attractive forces (spheres and container) resulting in the observed motions. The red spheres interact with each other without coming into physical contact (as shown in 240 fps slow motion) as like charges repel. Dancing Drops at the Exploratorium

Dancing Drops @exploratorium: an exhibit employing the Coandฤƒ effect on water droplets -an air stream attaches and wraps around the drops temporarily trapping them. As the air changes direction to flow around a drop, momentum is imparted to it pushing the drop against gravity. Constrained mostly by surface tension, under these conditions the water drops also have irregular and changing shapes leading to erratic motions in the uneven airstream.๐ŸŒŸ With special thanks to the Exploratorium! ➡ Follow the link in my profile for more info about the Exploratorium and where to find many of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #exploratorium #coanda #coandaeffect #gravity #newton #newtonssecondlaw #newtonsthirdlaw #actionreaction #equilibrium #netforce #physics #physicstoy #magnuseffect #science #scienceisawesome

Oil Drop Timer with Dolphins

Oil Drop Timer: immiscible fluids of different densities stay separate under gravity with the lightest density on top. The density of the plastic dolphins is greater than the density of the top fluid but less than the density of the bottom fluid, so they stay at the boundary in equilibrium. The dolphins have a metal weight in their tails so that the buoyant force will keep them upright even as the liquids trade places (2 minutes shown in time-lapse). Spindrift at the Exploratorium

Spindrift @exploratorium: surprisingly complex and graceful motion arise when rings are set to roll on a parabolic surface in this exhibit created by artist Shawn Lani at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. As the energy of the ring's center of mass trades to and fro from potential to kinetic, odd motions such as flip-flops, figure eights, and quick spins can occur in a determined but chaotic fashion. ๐ŸŒŸ With special thanks to the Exploratorium! ➡ Follow the link in my profile for more info about the Exploratorium and where to find many of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #exploratorium #physics #physicsfun #physicstoy #rolling #kineticart #kineticenergy #potentialenergy #gravity #chaos #chaoticmotion #energytransfer #science #scienceisawesome

Simple Electric Motor

Electric Motor: in its simplest form- coil, magnet, and battery. The wire of the coil has an insulating coating- and this coating is carefully scrapped off one side on each end. When current passes through the coil it becomes an electromagnet and the permanent magnet repels it making it spin- as it turns the currents goes on and off depending if the copper posts are in contact with the bare wire (current on) or the still insulated wire (current off). I have motors with fewer parts- but they operate on more complex principles. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for information on where to get this motor and other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #electromagnet #emf #electricmotor #physics #physicstoy #electriccurrent #science #worldssimplestmotor #windings #coils #electromagnetism #Bfield #ampereslaw #scienceisawesome #flux

Sand Shaker at the Exploratorium

Sand Shaker @exploratorium: a thin layer of white sand is subjected to vibrations on top of a circular plate in this exhibit created by artist Charles Sowers at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. When granular substances like sand are rapidly shaken, they often take on the properties of fluids through a process called vibrofluidization. Strange non-Newtonian fluid behavior is seen in this sand when the frequency of vibration is adjusted to 16Hz (shown here in 240fps slow motion)- amazing complexity arising from simple and regular motion! ๐ŸŒŸ With special thanks to the Exploratorium! ➡ Follow the link in my profile for more info about the Exploratorium and where to find many of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun. #exploratorium #physics #physicsfun #physicstoy #vibration #frequency #granular #sand #vibrofluidized #nonnewtonianfluid #fuiddynamics #science #scienceisawesome

Tautochrone Curve: Happy Pi Day!

Tautochrone Curve: a special physics toy for Pi Day- a cycloid curve has the special property that the time it takes for an object to slide to the bottom of it under gravity is the same no matter how high it starts up the curve. Also, the time it takes is always equal to pi times the square root of the cycloid radius divided by g. Presented here are three instances of two spheres being released at the same time, and each time they reach the bottom and collide at the center - even if one sphere is released much lower than the other! Polage with Light Box

Polage with Light Box: art with polarized light using polarizing sheets and cellulose to create changing forms and colors. This piece was created by Austine Wood Comarow- the main developer of this art form- and this piece is signed "Swallowtail 1987 18/75". Light has an orientation, denoted as polarization, and a polarizing filter can be used to block certain orientations. The colors in polage come from how the molecular structure of plastics can rotate the polarization of any light that passes through- but only light corresponding to yellows and greens gets rotated in plastic, reds and blues not so much. Polage uses different layers of plastic to rotate the light, and then polarizing filters are added to allow only certain frequencies (colors) of light through. Rotation of the filter in the light box allows the artist to incorporate more than one image and produce colorful metamorphosis. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for more info about the physics of polage and where to get art featured on @physicsfun #polarizer #polarizedlight #light #optics #physics #physicstoy #kineticart #electromagnetism #polage #science #linearpolarization #scienceisawesome #AustineWood @austine_studio

Three Polarizing Sheets

Three Polarizing Sheets: quantum mechanical behavior with light polarization. Two linear polarizing sheets oriented at 90 degrees blocks all light- if a third sheet is placed in between, at 45 degrees, an eighth of the original light then gets through! Magnetic Fluid Patterns at the Exploratorium

Magnetic Fluid Patterns @exploratorium: a dark ferromagnetic fluid, trapped in a small gap between two plates of glass, reacts under the influence of a powerful magnetic field in this exhibit at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
